Woody Welcomes

World Cup Break Special

Well, much to Woody's frustration, the next home Premier League game at the GTech will not be taking place until the 26th December when Spurs are our visitors - that's a whopping 46 day wait which will feel like a lifetime for this young Bee! It's all to do with something called The World Cup apparently...

But never mind - he will be getting into the World Cup and supporting England we're sure, and so we thought we'd fill in some of that time with a couple of Woody Welcomes Specials and so without further ado...

Woody Welcomes.....Brentford Women's Team - Sunday November 13th!

Yes, they're coming home! In a very special match, the wonderful Brentford FC Women's team will be playing a match at the Gtech Community Stadium for the very first time on Sunday at 3pm! They will be playing the Watford Ladies Development team and best of all, the tickets are free! Contact the Brentford Ticket Office for information on tickets.

We were moved to tears, like so many thousands of people, when The England Lionesses triumphed at Wembley back on the 31st July! (Did you know the Lionesses were based here in our area - at The Lensbury Club in Teddington - throughout the whole tournament, which made it feel even more special, and Woody and his sister Alice even got to meet some of the Lionesses, with Georgia Stanway being especially nice to them.) But above everything - what a massive boost for women's football in this country - the increased interest and profile can only be of benefit to all clubs and it's a great time to focus on our wonderful Ladies teams at Brentford.

Brentford FC Women's Club's history goes back over 30 years, being formed on 29th July 1990. The team started out as an under-14s team based at Feltham Arena in Hounslow playing in friendly matches before becoming eligible for senior age football in season 1995/96.

The Women's set up at Brentford operates as a First Team and a B Team - with the first team playing in the LSE Regional WFL Division 1 North. Last season they finished fourth in the league with 28 points from their 16 matches. They have had a steady start to the 2022/23 campaign with 13 points from the 7 games they have played so far and are currently in second place, they're unbeaten in the League since late September The B Team compete in the Greater London WFL Division One and have also had a positive start to their campaign.

The fixtures are all on the main Club website and all Bees fans are more than welcome to come and support and we would definitely encourage that! The teams also train there twice a week and at nearby Gunnersbury Park, and there are also regular gym sessions at Jersey Road, the training ground of Brentford FC.

Our Ladies head coach since 2018 is Karleigh Osborne, who's an absolute Bee's stalwart, having been a youth scholar before going on to play for the Club between 2005 and 2012, and you all know him of course from BFC's weekly YouTube show Pre-Match Pint, alongside Marcus Gayle and presenter Stu Wakeford.

Some of our current star players to look out for on Sunday include....

Lilly Hadrava is the Women’s First Team goalkeeper

Chloe Logie is the Women’s First Team top goal-scorer

The Women’s First Team have scored 22 goals in 11 games so far this season

Woody will be cheering them all on for sure.

Now, the Women's Club record attendance was achieved quite recently on March 6th of this year when the First Team beat Sport London e Benfica 7 -2 in a fantastic match at Bedfont in front of 1,010 fans!

You can watch some highlights from that magnificent day here:

What an advert for Women's football. That record attendance was a huge milestone for Brentford's First Team and the match formed part of the Club's celebrations ahead of International Women's Day, something to feel really proud about.

But building on from that day, we think this is such a great move by the Club - taking advantage of the Premier League break - to host this match at the Gtech and we can't wait to experience it.

We hope you've enjoyed finding out a little more about our wonderful women, and hopefully Woody will see lots of you on Sunday as we get ready to support our Queen Bees!
